Weight Loss For Teenagers – Some Guidelines

It is not really a secret that in America the overweight epidemic is sweeping the nation. Countless statistics are given out in the evening news programs stating how much fatter we all are today. Perhaps as a teenager you think that you are a part of this problem. Now only a doctor or other medical professional can give out medical advice that should be taken seriously. However, if you calculate your BMI or Body Mass Index and it states that you are overweight then there are some things you should consider before going on a diet.

First you should consider that you are a growing teenager and diets at your age are risky. Of course if  you are morbidly obese then a diet would only help you and not hinder your development. For most however they do not fit into this category. Rather most teenagers are merely overweight. Do you really want to stunt your growth by losing a few pounds?

Second you should look at your parents and grandparents. The reason is that sometimes your weight may be determined by your genes and you will have a tougher struggle with the bulge because of this fact. It is possible for you to have a healthy weight regardless of your parents and you should always strive for optimum health and not how great you look in the mirror.

Third is the honest self examination of your diet on a day to day basis. A nutritionist is the best person to seek advice on this subject. Besides writing all the food you eat during the day might get you to rethink some of the choices you make every hour of the day.

How you lose weight can also affect your growth as well. Perhaps hiring a personal trainer that specializes in your age group would be the best idea. Making a habit of moving around instead of having an inactive lifestyle is one of the best methods of losing that excess weight. I know of some teenagers who use video games to lose weight and have become really good at keeping it off.

As always in this age group seek medical advice before embarking on some fad diet. These diets do not really help the adults so why would they help a growing teenager. Use some common sense and you will have a much happier and healthier life.
